Avon Walk for Life

Every 30 seconds, a woman is diagnosed with Breast Cancer!
Every 75 seconds, a woman dies from breast cancer globally!
Over a million women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually!

Staggering figures indeed, which makes Breast Cancer is a global concern.

Although in Bosnia and Herzegovina National Cancer Register does not exist, reports of BH. Institute for Public Health say that 1600 women a year have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Unofficial data says that cca. 170 women die of breast cancer every year.

The Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade was founded in 1993 to provide women, particularly those who are undeserved, with direct access to breast cancer education and early detection screening devices like mammography and clinical breast exams. From 1992 through 2011, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has raised and awarded more than US$ 700 million in 50 countries worldwide for awareness and education; screening and diagnosis; access to treatment; support services and scientific research.

In 2008. Avon supported the International Women's Club -Sarajevo (IWCS) in its biggest undertaking called Project Mammogram which highlighted the importance of Breast cancer screening and culminated in the first-of-its-kind Walk for Life held in April 6, 2008.

Avon Walk for Life 2009. gathered cca 2000 participants in Sarajevo and money that has been raised was is used for Mamotome machine for biopsy for KCU Sarajevo, worth 110.000 KM. There were also Walks for life in Mostar and Banjaluka and the funds that have been raised provided educational workshops in rural areas of Herzegovina, held by women from Novi Pogled Association in Mostar, as well as education of two doctors from Clinical Centre Banja Luna in Milano.

Walk for life 2010. had an humanitarian movie premiere and Bazaar, which helped in finalizing raising funds for final payment of Mammotome machine . The significance of donation of this machine was emphasized by Head of oncology unit in KCU Sarajevo, dr Semir Beslija, who said that the machine would provide precise diagnostics in the shortest period of time.

"The waiting list for this kind of examination was three months. With its own machine, Oncology unit can reduce this waiting list on one week maximum" said dr Beslija.
